OUGD502: Studio session - Presentation - 10 Successes

In our groups we were asked to come up with ten successes from our first year. The list is as follows:

1. Passed first year
2. Living alone/ independent
3. Learnt to cook
4. Printing resources/ Learnt to screen print etc.
5. Developed digital skills
6. Learnt how to answer brief/ structured process
7. Confidence
8. Improved my personal and professional practice.
9. Improved literacy skills
10. Balancing part-time work on top of the course.
*11. Learn to initiate workshop skills into practice.
*12. Prioritise briefs.

As a class, together we discussed what we thought were the most appropriate successes to graphic design, and came up with a list as a whole. Here is the class list:

1. Presentation skills
2. Feedback
3. Workshops
4. Independent.
5. Research/ development
6. Understand time management.
7. Working in/ with groups/ specialisms.
8. Confidence/ motivation.
9. Theory/ context.
10. Style.

With help from the list we were asked to individually pick out ten successful things which I'd like to be successful at/ improve upon:

1. I'd like to improve my software skills.
2. Improve my awareness and knowledge of designers and studios.
3. I'd like improve my personal and professional practice, and get a better understanding of the route I'd like to go down.
5. I'd like to narrow down my interests and find a real focus for my work.
6. I want to improve confidence so I feel comfortable when presenting my work at crits and in front of the class.
7. I'd like my work to be driven by clever concepts.
8. I'd like a greater understanding of how to properly research. I believed I lacked a structured process for researching last year.
9. I'd like to improve my social skills I believe this is a fundamental part of finding and interacting with clients.
10. Being successful with time management over the process of different briefs.

We then presented our summer briefs to our groups, given 5 minutes each. After each presentation we wrote feedback.

After finishing the presentations we were asked to highlight three different types of feedback.

1. Useful feedback
2. Could be useful
3. Things you like to here/ ego

Here is my feedback put into categories:

Useful feedback

Using images to compliment the start would have been effective.
Less text, and more image.
I liked his work, I felt the presentation reflected a good range of what he was about
Advice for next time would be extra care in time management

Could be useful

It was good to hear about someone I recognise but I didn't know about.
Power point was strong
Thought the presentation was strongest when using both text and image

Things you like to here

Clear presentation
Good research
Had just enough information
Good research, very good understanding of work
Very well researched

3 objectives of how to improve my summer brief:

- Add more images to your presentation, as paragraphs of text allows for a reason for people to lose attention.

- Explain more of Shigeo Fukuda's work in-depth, why he's used what images, colours etc.

- Take care when organising time, and memorise your presentation so I'm not always looking at the screen.
